About Ms. M

I am a 4th & 5th grade teacher at Mechanicsville Elementary School. I am so fortunate to work with an amazing staff and team. But the best part of my job is the wonderful children I get to work with!

A little about me. I grew up here in Richmond and graduated from Maggie L. Walker Governor's School. I played field hockey and was a gymnast for many years. It is still one of my favorite sports to this day. In 2007 I graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a Masters in Elementary Education. After college, I moved back to Richmond and have since enjoyed living in such a fun city. I started my teaching career at MES and find it to be a wonderful place to work!

In my free time I love to run, read, and spend time with family and friends.  I am lucky to have my family in Richmond as well. I have a family dog named Elvis, and love to share ridiculous stories about him with my students! He also tends to turn up in many of our word problems. :)  I have also recently rescued a crazy puppy named Maxine, and this has been a fun adjustment for me to share with my class. She never fails to do something mischievous, and I love sharing her antics with the kids. In my spare time I also love to throw myself into an art project. My newest obsession is finding junky items at yard sales and antique stores, and spray painting them vibrant colors. I love art, and believe this is a great way to learn, so we do many art projects in my classroom. In fact, my Masters' thesis was on incorporating art and art history into the 4th grade curriculum, specifically in writing. Students have loved this project we do each year, and I look forward to continuing to implement it.

Tiny pup, but not for long!
She really did eat my homework.

One of my biggest passions is traveling.  I love to explore new places and see new things!  On my most recent excursion, I explored castles and big cities alike in Germany.  It was a fabulous trip! I want to see as much of the world as I can. Every now and then, I think it's important to be remove yourself from your day-to-day and be reminded that the world is a huge, diverse place.  I love to get this dose of perspective while experiencing another culture.
